- Story Text:Security was tight in the southern Philippines on Tuesday (May 30) following a crackdown against Islamic militants which has sent thousands of people fleeing.
The fighting has seen a steady increase of evacuees flocking to temporary shelters as the battle continued on its eighth day. One evacuee said they crossed a nearby mountain for seven days in order to avoid the crossfire.
On the outskirts of Iligan city, about 38 kilometres (24 miles) from Marawi, authorities have set up stringent checkpoints to protect residents from a possible spill over of the fighting.
Nearly 84,000 people have been displaced by the siege in the southern city of Marawi and ongoing battle against Islamic State-linked Maute group, which has left over 100 dead since the fighting began on May 23 and has prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law on the whole island of Mindanao. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
