- Story Text: The first batch of the relaunched Nokia basic phone 3310 was sold out on pre-orders on its launch day in Finland on Wednesday (May 31), following similar success in Britain.
Once the world's dominant phonemaker, Nokia sold its handset operations to Microsoft in 2014, leaving it focused on telecom network equipment.
But its name is now re-entering the mobile market via a licensing deal with HMD Global, a new company led by ex-Nokia executives and backed by Chinese electronics giant Foxconn.
Nokia 3310, a talk and text phone, was the world's most popular device in the year 2000 and the first handset for many smartphone users of today.
The updated version, in bright red or yellow or more modest blue or grey and featuring the classic Snake game, sells for 49 euros (52 U.S. dollars).
HMD hopes that its 22 hours of talk time and up to one month of stand-by time will heighten the phone's appeal as a second device for nostalgic Nokia fans looking for an antidote to smartphone overload. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
