An exact number is not yet certain but in the meantime the figures are far above 80 dead and several hundred injured. All of them Afghan citizens. Many civilians, completely innocent people. There are also injured people in the German embassy but they are mostly lightly injured. Among the fatalities are most likely Afghan security personnel who were employed at the German embassy but also many people who were not involved. It is a terrible attack and we will try to help the families. And it is proof again that terror keeps trying to target western institutions but also its own people." - Story Text: German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel on Wednesday (May 31) expressed his horror at the 'terrible attack' in Kabul which took place close to the German embassy in Afghanistan.
A powerful bomb hidden in a sewage tanker exploded in the morning rush hour in the centre of the Afghan capital on Wednesday, police said, killing at least 80 people, wounding hundreds and damaging embassy buildings.
The bomb, one of the deadliest in Kabul and coming at the start of the holy month of Ramadan, exploded close to the fortified entrance to the German embassy, killing a security guard and wounding some staff. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
