- Story Text: Pro-democracy in Hong Kong called for improvement in human rights and freedom of expression in China as they launched a bottle of Chinese rice wine with a label commemorating the 1989 crackdown on democracy protesters in Tiananmen Square in Beijing on Friday (June 2).
The simple ceremony came two days before the 28th anniversary of the bloodshed crackdown. The small bottle of "baijiu", Chinese rice wine, was produced in China one year ago, and as a result four men - Chen Bing, Fu Hailu, Luo Fuyu and Zhang Junyoung - have been charged for producing and selling the rice wine.
The label on the bottle features military tanks that resemble the iconic Tiananmen Tank Man photo and the words "Eight Liquor Six Four" - a homophone for Eight Nine Six Four, better known as the date of the Tiananmen crackdown.
China has never released a death toll but estimates from human rights groups and witnesses range from several hundred to several thousand. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
