- Story Text: The city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was thrown into the spotlight on Thursday (June 1) as President Donald Trump defended his decision to pull out the U.S. from the Paris climate accord by saying, "I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh not Paris."
The mayor of the steel-making city, Bill Peduto, quickly retorted on Twitter, saying he would continue to follow the Paris agreement's guidelines for the people, the economy and the future.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, who heads a grouping of cities that have declared their commitment to fighting climate change, posted a video on her Twitter page expressing support for Peduto and for his city.
French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said "anything that is good for the planet is good for the workers of Pittsburgh."
"Pittsburgh is on the same planet as Paris," Philippe said, echoed by his predecessor and fellow conservative politician, Alain Juppe. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
