- Story Text: Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said Friday (June 2) that the United States' withdrawal from the Paris climate deal is "very worrisome" and added he expects U.S. President Donald Trump to reverse his decision.
In 2015, Peru hosted the Paris agreement and, earlier this year, the worst downpours in decades triggered floods and landslides, killing at least 78 people and making around 70,000 homeless.
Kuczynski said the Peruvian government is working very fast to prevent another possible natural disaster due to climate change, as there is a 50 percent risk of an El Niño phenomenon occurring at the end of the year. The El Niño phenomenon generates an increase in the temperatures of the waters of the Pacific Ocean that in turn causes irregular conditions in the climate.
He also defended the Organization of American States (OAS) foreign ministers' meeting about Venezuela, saying the region had to defend principles of human rights and democracy. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
