The Paris climate change accord will live on, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said on Friday (June 2) after U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed his plan to pull the world's second biggest carbon emitter out of the deal on the basis it was bad for the American economy and would weaken its sovereignty.
Joining a stream of international criticism, Hidalgo, who chairs the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, said money going towards helping reduce the carbon footprint was a long-term investment and mayors from the C40 would keep working together on concrete solutions.
With Trump's action, the United States will walk away from nearly every other nation in the world on one of the pressing global issues of the 21st century. Syria and Nicaragua are the only other non-participants in the accord, signed by 195 nations in Paris in 2015. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
