- Title: LEBANON: AT LEAST TEN KILLED AS CAR BOMB HITS PORT OF JOUNIEH
- Date: 7th April 1986
- Summary: A car bomb exploded in the Lebanese port of Jounieh, near President Amin Gemayel's Phalange Party offices on April 8, killing at least ten civilians and wounding up to 110. The blast occurred as the main square in Jounieh, 20 kilometres (13 miles) north of Beirut, was crowded with shoppers and office workers on their lunch break. Smoke and debris billowed over the square, as ten charred bodies were pulled out of the rubble. Two high-rise buildings were badly damaged, and scores of cars burnt out in the blast. Police said they believed many people were still buried in the debris of shops and supermarkets in the square. Jounieh is a Christian-controlled area. The blast was the latest in a series that have killed more than 50 people, including children, and wounded dozens in Christian areas in and around Beirut this year. Most have been planted near offices of the ruling Phalange Party. As rescue teams clawed through the wreckage, nervous Christian militiamen sealed off the devastated square, firing their rifles in the air to clear the way for ambulances. Police said most of the casualties were employees of the Credit Libanais banks in the two buildings.
