- Story Text:U.S. Marines landed amphibious assault vehicles on Latvian coast on Tuesday (June 6) as part of NATO's annual maritime-focused exercise BALTOPS.
The exercise, aimed at strengthen NATO's forces as well as those of its regional partners', is attended by air, naval and land forces of 14 allied and partner countries this year.
The Baltic states have pressed the United States and NATO to take additional security measures in the region ahead of Russia's plans to stage the Zapad 2017 exercise near its western borders in September.
Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Poland have felt especially vulnerable since Moscow's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region in 2014 and its support for pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine.
U.S Vice Admiral Christopher W. Grady said the exercise on Latvian ground was aimed at deterring aggression and assure the U.S.' commitment to defend its Baltic partners.
BALTOPS, an exercise that started in 1972 in the Baltic Sea, this year takes place between June 1 and 16 for its 45th edition. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
