11.29.52 INTERVIEW WITH PRESIDENT BAKILI MULUZI
RE CHANGE SINCE ELECTIONS - is the whole bringingì
about of human rights, the question of humanì
rights, that was the concern of all of us & indeedì
the int community.
11.30.08 DEMOCRACY there's now freedom of speech,ì
people can express themselves, there's noì
detention without trial - whole change in people'sì
lives i.t.o theit own rights I think that's moreì
fundamental than anything else...
11.30.24 People are free to express themselves andì
they're not afraid that anybody can come and justì
detain them without any charge...
11.31.10 CHANGE 2 AREAS - POLITICAL CHANGE,ì
BRINGING HUMAN RIGHTS TO OUR PEOPLE Now we'reì
looking foreward in bringing about a new vision,ì
economic vision for our people.
11.31.24 Democracy cannot be sustainable if youì
don't have economic viability...
11.31.50 We've brought about that democraticì
change but what is NB now for a gorv of the futureì
is for the economic viability for our people
11.32.09 RE KWACHA? Before the change the int.ì
community withdrew aid from Malawi as 1 of theì
pressures to make the MCP gorv change & thatì
affected our kwacha.
11.32.23 KWACHA = DEVALUED It's the historicì
background which we actually took from MCP whichì
we're now trying to address...
11.33.18 We're inviting foreign investors to comeì
to Malawi to generate employment for our people.
11.33.27 In order for this economy to beì
sustainable we need people to come & invest inì
country. The question is what do we offer inì
return?
11.33.34 We are offering incentives...hard-workingì
people, stability in the country, the beauty ofì
the country...
11.34.00 RE MALAWIAN INVESTMENT AGENCY -ì
ONE-WINDOW-STOP - CAN GET ALL THE ANSWERS FROM 1ì
MINISTRY
11.34.25 RE POVERTY I'm deeply deeply concerned. Iì
have repeatedly said that poverty is a danger toì
democracy & it is.
11.34.43 64% of PEOPLE LIVE BELOW POVERTY LINE =ì
DANGEROUS SCENARIO - ADDRESS THIS so that theì
people can at least taste life. I've taken that asì
a priority..
11.35.06 RE PRESIDENTIAL COUNCIL - SIT AS CHAIRMANì
PERSONALLY...WE ARE INVOLVING THEM AT A GRASSROOTSì
LEVEL...
11.35.26 It is a message & a challenge which ourì
new gorv is taking very seriously because it is aì
problem.
11.36.10 RE HIGH PRICES COMMODITIES? CIVICì
EDUCATION - MALAWI = CHEAPEST IN THIS REGION
PEOPLE ARE POOR KWACHA = DEPRECIATED BECAUSE WEì
IMPORT ALL RAW MATERIALS
11.36.48 PREVIOUS GORV SUBSIDISED A LOT OFì
COMMODITIES at the expense of the poor
11.37.12 85% OF PEOPLE LIVE IN RURAL AREAS ONLYì
PLEASING 15% OF PEOPLE
11.37.24 PRICES UP BUT IN RETURN WILL GETì
DEVELOPMENT
11.37.53 RE AIDS - SINCE 1985 that time theì
previous gorv let me say it, doing nothing aboutì
it. when we took over we've taken that as a veryì
serious problem...FOR THE REGION
11.38.38 What we're doing is civic education toì
teach them that's NB to change their lives
11.39.04 RE ENVIRONMENT / CONSERVATION?
11.39.25 DEFORESTATION - CIVIC EDUCATION HAVE TOì
PRESERVE NATURAL RESOURCES
11.40.33 RE DROUGHT? ADDRESSING THAT BY COMING UPì
WITH IRRIGATION PRG
11.40.47 Although this year we seem to be havingì
rains, it will be difficult to catch up.
11.41.17 we have to teach our people how they canì
actually use the land properly...
11.41.35 LONG-TERM PRG TO INTRODUCE IRRIGATION ASì
AN ANSWER TO PROBLEM OF DROUGHT - DIVERSIFY - NOTì
ONLY GROW MAIZE
11.42.14 I see the future with a lot ofì
courageNaturally we've got a lot of problems. Iì
don't want to pretend that things are going to beì
easy. It took years for the political change toì
come about.
11.42.33 I'm seeing to the people of Malawi thatì
we have to move together, & be patient. This gorvì
is serious in trying to change the whole lives ofdì
our people & I see Malawi moving forward...
11.42.54 Message to people of Malawi is let usì
work together. If they can bear with us, that inì
order to change this economy it will not be easyì
at all. People will have to work very hard; thereì
has to be stability in the country; there has toì
be peace in order for economic recovery to work.
