SPECIAL PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE re: Mandela'sì
statement to Senate - acknowledged that heì
instructed the ANC security to protect Shell Houseì
even if people are to be killed
DEPUTY MINISTER J. MATTHEWS SPEECH cont.; CONSTANDì
VILJOEN [FF]; TONY LEON [DP]; DANIE SCHUTTE [NP]
00.02.11 MATTHEWS [INKATHA FREEDOM PARTY]: ...areì
we dealing here with an ambush, were peopleì
ambushed or were they really shot because theyì
were trying to storm the Shell House entrance? Ifì
so why did none of the people fall down in Pleinì
Street at the entrance to Shell House? Why wereì
they all shot elsewhere?
00.03.41 ...it seems to me that the investigationì
into this tragic incident must be speeded up & ifì
there are to be prosecutions, there must beì
prosecutions which will then enable us to have aì
qualified answer to the question that arise out ofì
the incident that occurred outside Shell House...
00.04.25 ...I have listened to a theory regardingì
the IFP & the former gorv...if a rational theoryì
is presented it will be consistent with all theì
proved facts...who killed these IFP members?
00.05.45 Who killed whom and why?!
00.05.58 ...never forget that when you point aì
finger there are 3 fingers pointing at you!
00.08.02 ...I am not prepared to get involved inì
criticisms of political parties; I am notì
interested....what I am interested in, are theì
facts of the situation which are suffiecient toì
satisfy a rational person....
00.08.36 END SPEECH
00.08.46 GENERAL CONSTAND VILJOEN [FREEDOM FRONT]
00.10.29 IN ENGLISH
00.10.54 ...this event in itself in my opinion isì
sufficient proof of the fact that the amnestyì
cut-off date of 6 December for political motivatedì
crimes....is an arbitrary one & that does notì
relate to the situation that existed on the groundì
00.11.24 ..it is a well-known fact that I myselfì
was at a time with many of my followers activelyì
preparing for war or armed struggle. I willì
certainly be liable for prosecution if indemnityì
is not given. The ANC's self-defence units...
00.12.38 ...we all served the development of theì
endemic nature of the violence of our society: forì
the liberation movements, violence became aì
strategy of change & it produced some heroes; forì
the state & its supporters, more violent measuresì
& even ?? became justified and they produced theirì
own heroes. Today we sit with the product of Shellì
House & this is but a single manifestation of thisì
00.13.45 ...Shell House resulted out of Massì
Action that could not be controlled...
00.14.13 END SPEECH VILJOEN
00.14.20 TONY LEON [DEMOCRATIC PARTY]
00.14.32 ....there are 7 major issues at stakeì
here....if the President wishes the DP toì
apologise for first raising this issue in paliì
then we must with regret decline...
00.15.01 ...the real issue at stake here isì
whether or not there has been an obstruction ofì
justice & a....attempt at a cover-up by the ANCì
which has prevented a proper police investigationì
from taking its course?
00.16.48 ...the President should explain why heì
chose to make his remarks on Shell House in theì
Senate last week & why it that thatì
statement...which is so material was not includedì
among the 12 statements ANC officials made to theì
SAP until over 2 months ago?
00.21.49 ...we must all continue to be watch dogsì
and not lap dogs END SPEECH LEON
00.22.03 DANIE SCHUTTE [NATIONAL PARTY] Thisì
Chamber is not a Court of Law. We are notì
empowered to either convict or acquit anybody butì
we are the watchdogs of the people...
00.22.40 ...it is not Mr Nelson Mandela or theì
President of SA that is on trial today...
00.22.49 ...persons & presidents come & go. Whatì
is on trial here today is our whole country &ì
particularly our new democracy...
00.23.05 ...we are on trial..
00.24.19 ...we must try and depoliticise thisì
00.25.31 QUOTING LONDON SUNDAY TIMES REGARDINGì
INCIDENT [ORDER! RISING ON POINT OF ORDER!]
00.26.18 ...there is no evidence of an attackì
which could in the circumstances have justified anì
attack in self-defence...
00.27.00 WHY HAS THE VIDEO OF SURVEILLANCE ATì
SHELL HOUSE NOT BEEN SUBMITTED TO GOLDSTONEì
COMMISSION / SAP?
00.27.15 POLICE WERE DENIED ENTRANCE BY MANDELA ..ì
if the ANC was innocent & attacked, why deny theì
00.27.49 ...now nearly 15 months after theì
incident the President indicates his support forì
the actions of the ANC guards and he is therebyì
involved...he's making politics out of this matter
