ANC RALLY IN EERSTERUS PRETORIA ADDRESSED BYì
PRESIDENT MANDELA re: Local government electionì
campaign; makes appeal to keep Springbok as symbolì
for rugby
13.44.27 MANDELA'S SPEECH cont. IN AFRIKAANS
13.53.50 A month ago on 27 April we celebrated theì
first anniversary of our democracy...
13.56.56 Yesterday the Springboks became the rugbyì
world champions. They beat one of the best teamsì
in the world, the All Blacks. Before they went toì
the field I went to their dressing room & I toldì
them that they are fighting one of the strongestì
teams in the world but I said, the Springboks hadì
already beaten the then champions
13.57.46 of rugby, the Wallabies, that they've wonì
every match they played & that victory over theì
All Blacks will make their achievement even moreì
significant, that the whole country black & whiteì
was behind them & they must go to the field fullyì
motivated, knowing that they will bring glory toì
SA.
13.58.29 The Springboks achieved that. They haveì
brought pride & glory to our country but when theyì
defeated the Wallabies, the then current championsì
some freedom fighters in this country, some ofì
whom are in the cabinet, came to me & said,ì
reminded me that the decision of the Sportsì
Council was that the symbol bearing the Springbokì
should end at the end of the WRC.
13.59.21 That was the decision, but these comradesì
came forward and said, in the light of the victoryì
of the Springboks over the current champions, weì
must review our decision and make this symbolì
permanent for rugby in this country [APPLAUSE]
13.59.42 They argued that the Springbok isì
indigenous to SA; it is not to be found anywhereì
in the world; it is only to be found in SA andì
that now that we are building a nation we shouldì
retain a symbol which is going to unite all ourì
people.
14.00.18 ...you must remember the argument that isì
being used: it is said that this symbol representsì
Apartheid but they said, Mr President, why do youì
stay in the Union Buildings? Why do use Tuynhuys,ì
why do you hold your cabinet meetings in the Unionì
Buildings & in Tuynhuys? Why do you attendì
Parliament because all these are symbols ofì
Apartheid.
14.00.58 I had no argument against that. But Iì
said to them that this is an important matter. Iì
will brief the Minister of Sports...I called Steveì
Tswete & told him this. He indicated & I said toì
him, take this matter to the Sports Council...if
we accept this symbol & review our decision, weì
will unite this country as never before.
14.02.08 ...whatever they decide we will supportì
them but I sincerely hope that they will not beì
emotional; they will be calm because there is aì
real possibility if we review our decision and setì
the Springbok for rugby as our symbol we willì
unite the country.
14.02.30 The Springboks have already done that &ì
we can cement that unity by taking that decision.

13.44.27 MANDELA'S SPEECH cont. IN AFRIKAANS
13.53.50 A month ago on 27 April we celebrated theì
