08.42.37 Intv. AMBASSADOR STARTS
08.43.30 re: ...we'll have about 1200 military andì
policemen helping the peace process in Angola, andì
this is the largest participation Brazil has hadì
since the Second World War, when we sent over
20 000 people to fight the Nazi Fascism in Italy.
08.44.03 WHY IS BRAZIL SO INVOLVED? ...Brazil hasì
decided to have a larger participation inì
International affairs...
08.44.28 ...apart from this fact, Angola isì
brother country to Brazil - Brazil was the firstì
country to recognise its independence in 1975 andì
we're to have closer ties with Angola...
08.45.01 ...this brought the fact that we thinkì
important to take part in peacekeeping missionsì
organised by UN...
08.45.16 ...has also to do with the fact that weì
have cultural and political affinities which weì
want to cultivate.
08.45.27 HOW DOES THE PEOPLE OF BRAZIL FEEL FORì
THEIR SOLDIERS TO COME HERE? ...we are spendingì
about $140 million to keep those people here...
no political party were against those troops beingì
here.
08.46.11 ...we know Brazil is a very popularì
country here in terms of its music etc. ...
we know there is a very deep goodwill towardsì
Brazil...
08.46.35 ...as the majority of the Angolan peopleì
are in favour of this peacekeeping process theì
Brazilian forces would be helping this peaceì
process. I'm sure they will be well recieved.
08.46.47 HOW DOES HE FEEL ABOUT THE PEACE PROCESS?
I feel optimistic about it. I'm not an expert onì
the subject - I've arrived in Angola only a monthì
ago, but by clear that the peace process has to goì
on because it is the only chance Angola has toì
stop wasting material and human resources in theì
war effort, and organise it's economic life.
08.47.27 Angola is a very rich country potentiallyì
and as soon as peace is assured, I think economicì
life will resume and people will have some accessì
to social well-being, which they deserve.
08.47.47 IS HE CONFIDENT THE UNAVEM-MISSION WILLì
SUCCEED? ...yes I'm confident that it will beì
successful...
08.48.07 WHAT WILL YOUR BRAZILIAN TROOPS MAINLY BEì
INVOLVED IN? ...infantry troops only to arrive in ì
a month...will be involved regrouping UNITA...
the two health groups - medical work...engineeringì
company - clearing roads, rebuilding roads,ì
building bridges...
08.49.06 END OF INTERVIEW
08.55.44 Intv. MAJOR VALDETARO STARTS
08.56.07 re: ...we are ariving in Angola to stayì
for six months, we'll try to esablish theì
communication between Luanda and ?...
08.56.31 WHY IMPORTANT? ...Angola and Brazil isì
like a friend is like a brother is two nations isì
like friends(smile).
08.56.51 re: 200 TROOPS IN HIS BATALLION
08.57.21 WHAT WOULD HE LIKE TO SAY FOR HIS PEOPLEì
IN BRAZIL? ...we are very happy here. Angola is aì
place where we can work and for us it is veryì
important.
08.57.44 WOULD UNAVEM BE A SUCCESS? ...I think itì
would be a success in a while.
08.57.51 WHY? ...because it - the UN wants toì
maintain the peace and peace is all of importantì
in the world. - Copyright Holder: Visnews
