IN CAPE TOWN:
10.22.28 [NOTE LIGHTS OF EXIBIT CHANGING TOì
DIFFERENT COLOURS] INTERVIEW: CATHY GRUNDIG
10.22.55 BOARD MEMBERS SAW EXIBIT IN LONDON
10.23.17 WANTED TO BRING PART OF THE AIDS QUILTì
FROM US - NOT POSSIBLE - GOT CATALOGUE FOR POSIVEì
LIVES - KIND OF PROBLEMS IN BRITAIN - DIDN'Tì
REFLECT SA'S PROBLEMS - PHOTOGRAPHER GIDEON MENDEL
10.24.13 EPIDEMIC IN BRITAIN = LARGELY MALE WHITEì
HOMOSEXUAL DISEASE - HIGH INFECTION IN PRISONS -ì
DRUG-USER PROBLEM
10.24.32 ...our experience here is very different.ì
We have a hetrosexual disease and we also have aì
very big pediatric problem
10.25.59 IS IT USUAL FOR THE MUSEUM TO INVOLVEì
ITSELF IN SOCIAL PROBLEMS?
10.26.08 ...it's a photographic exhibition; it'sì
also an art exhibition & it also shows a veryì
significant social problem that we face today & Iì
think all art does that in a sense...
10.26.30 ...this particular exhibition happens toì
focus on a very NB health issue that we faceì
globally.
10.26.39 WHAT HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN? The responseì
has been absolutely wonderful - in fact justì
looking at our attendance figures...there's been aì
huge increase in our numbers...
10.27.00 In August 1994 we had about 6000 visitorsì
this year in August we've had close to 13 000. Soì
there's bee a very very positive response from theì
public.
10.27.14 WHO WERE YOU TARGETTING?ì
Initially...being Art Educators we felt that itì
would be difficult for us to bring across theì
issue of HIV & AIDS properly because that isì
obviously not our field.
10.27.38 What we did was we had a lot ofì
discussion with about 12 local HIV & AIDS relatedì
organizations here in CT...
10.28.02 ...through them we identified particularì
areas that they felt needed to be targetted.
10.28.05 One was obviously decision-makers inì
government...invited to Opening...a lot ofì
decision-makers...
10.28.25 NEXT EVENING HAD WESTERN CAPE MINISTER OFì
HEALTH EBRAHIM RASOOL TO ADDRESS INVITED AUDIENCEì
OF DOCTORS
10.28.45 TRIED TO INVOLVE PEOPLE THAT WOULD CHANGEì
LEGISLATION
10.28.50 ...the other target groups were obviouslyì
teenagers. we put together an education prg...
3-4 SCHOOLS PER DAY COMING THROUGH EXHIBITION
10.29.22 SCHOOLS FROM DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES
10.29.49 LEVEL OF AWARENESS? A LOT OFì
MISCONCEPTIONS THAT EXIST ABOUT DISEASE and I thatì
this exhibition...has helped to changeì
pre-conceived ideas & misconceptions that peopleì
did have about the disease. It has been veryì
effective in that way.
10.30.49 WITH DEPT OF HEALTH GIVES INFO TO PEOPLEì
ABOUT SAVER SEX & OTHER ISSUES
10.31.19 HAVE A SATELLITE-EXHIBITION - HELPS AS ANì
OUTREACH EXTENSION TO THIS EXHIBIT
10.33.44 PHOTOGRAPHS - AIDS BABY
10.34.53 TOWNSHIP WOMAN HOLDING BABY
10.37.58 WIDE ZOOM IN TTHROUGH DOORWAYS TO BURNINGì
CANDLE
10.38.47 MORE PHOTOGRAPHS
10.39.47 VISITORS LOOKING AT EXHIBIT
10.46.58 INTERVIEW: STEVE VICTOR - WHAT HAS BEENì
THE LEVEL OF AWARENESS? Most of the kids I'veì
worked with are already aware...
10.47.32 ...the response has been great...theyì
were like very excited to know something moreì
about AIDS and also to I suppose meet HIV+ people
I don't know why people always has to put a faceì
to AIDS... it has helped, not in all instances butì
most of the times [LOOKS AROUND] when I've toldì
them that I am positive myself - they sort of openì
up & they can't believe what they see.
10.48.22 I think the majority people out there areì
ignorant in that they think that if a person isì
HIV+ or is diagnosed with AIDS, the person shouldì
be ill, skinny & has basically no quality of life
10.48.43 I stand infront of them [LAUGHING] and Iì
say - and they say well we don't believe you...theì
bloodtest proved that I am + for about 7 years nowì
and they can't believe that I am healthy, capable,ì
mentally very positive & that life caries on asì
normal.
10.49.21 RE PERCEPTION THAT DISEASE AFFECTS BLACKSì
RATHER THAN WHITES? VARIES FROM COMMUNITY & AGEì
GROUP OF KIDS
10.49.30 Mainly the black community believe thatì
they are exempted from the disease, that it onlyì
affects white people - there are myths about usingì
condoms in the black community & its veryì
difficult to bridge that & to convince them to useì
condoms.
10.50.00 COLOUREDS = MORE ACDEPTING - USE CONDOMS
10.50.20 CHILD ABUSE - KIDS SEXUALLY ACTIVE ATì
VERY YOUNG AGE IN BLACK COMMUNITY - CHILD ABOUT 12
10.50.31 They start that young...with the majorityì
of the white students that I've seen, the parentsì
have this attitude that - our kids don't get up toì
mischief - with the coloured & the blackì
community, they accept it as part of growing-up &ì
they don't deny that there kids are actuallyì
experimenting - sexually or with drugs...
10.51.11 THAT'S WHY EASIER TO WORK WITH THEM =ì
MORE OPENMINDED MORE WILLING TO TALK
10.51.23 WHY RELUCTAMNCE FROM WHITES TO SEND THEIRì
KIDS TO AN EXHIBIT SUCH AS THIS? COMMUNITY = VERYì
CONSERVATIVE - AFRIKAANS BACKGROUND - DON'T TALKì
ABOUT SEX - DON'T WANT THEIR KIDS EXPOSED TOì
KNOWLEDGE OF AIDS
10.52.18 REPEAT ABOVE QUESTION
10.52.44 I feel it is every child's Constitutionalì
right to have the knowledge to know how to protectì
themselves. It's no use denying - all childrenì
experiment...
10.53.05 ...they experiment and there's nothingì
you can do about that & trying to deny that &ì
saying that they don't or can't, will actuallyì
just push them & once you say you can't doì
something they will actually do it just to try it.
10.53.31 MET PEOPLE WHO HAD SEX FOR 1ST TIME &ì
WERE ON THAT 1ST OCCASION INFECTED had they hadì
the necessary knowledge it could have beenì
prevented.
10.53.46 SUPPORT FROM DEPT OF EDUCATION?
10.54.33 ...and I'm angry at the white communityì
for not accepting those invitations & exposingì
their children...
10.55.03 ...one of the very first questions thatì
the kids ask me, is where does it come from - andì
there's always this fight - is it a black diseaseì
- is it a white disease and it's neither. Itì
afects everybody as soon as you become sexuallyì
active...
10.55. 35 ...sometimes when I tell them that I amì
+, then it sort of sinks through...
10.55.58 I don't believe that people should put aì
face to AIDS. You should look at everybody outì
there as potentially being infected.
10.56.30 ..it's not my duty to look after you...ì
each person must look after himself because theì
next person is not going to take thatì
responsibility...
