Intv. BAND STARTS
re: We're called the ELECTRIC PETALì
GROOVE MACHINE. There was a band called theì
ELECTRIC PETALS, band called 8 LEGED GROOVEì
MACHINE - we've fused into one band.
WHAT KIND OF MUSCI DO YOU MAKE? ...it's aì
cross of all different cultures, because obviouslyì
being white South Africans in a sence of pureì
Africans, although we are because we live here...
...we're very versitile of what we do, weì
don't catagorise ourselves as just a Rock band...
...our last album we had a clasical piece we hadì
a township piece...
WHERE HAS MOST OF YOU SUPPORT COME FROM?
...urban dwellers, mainly because we've played inì
cities, we havn't realy gone out in the country...
YOU THINK THERE IS A MARKET FOR THISì
INTERNATIONALY? ...that's the whole idea of thisì
band. Not to be just internationaly, but to takeì
your rock music and give it sort of an Africanì
feel...
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO PLAY THEì
SUPPORT ACT TO "SIMPLE MINDS" ...it's a bigì
win-win situation for everybody, because of theì
style that we play it's coming from where we'reì
coming from...people that we know...it will be aì
big exposure for that...
...we're very proud to be on the "Simpleì
Minds" tour, because in our books any band thatì
can write songs like 'Mandela Day', it's the rightì
band, it's the right mix.
WHAT KIND OF IMPACT SINCE THE LIFTING OFì
THE CULTURAL BOYCOTT HAS BANDS LIKE "SIMPLE MINS"ì
HAD ON THE LOCAL MUSIC INDUSTRY? Obviously it putsì
alot more presure on local bands to be better,ì
bedause the audience/the mass now has a chance toì
go and see good international acts...
It's a very possitive thing, it's a growì
thing, because on a technical side presentation,ì
just meeting people like this who are successfulì
at what they do...we just want to learn as much asì
we can.
DO YOU FEEL THAT IT'S A ONE WAY STREET -ì
THE DOOR HASN'T REALY OPENED AT THE OTHER SIDE FORì
SOUTH AFRICAN MUSICAINS? It will take time,ì
everything works like this. We're stille veryì
young in this country. There hasn't realy been aì
"White" South African band that realy cracked itì
overseas.
ARE YOU VERY CONSCIOUS OF THE FACT THATì
YOU'RE A "ALL-WHITE" BAND? We not conscious, weì
honest. Today people may live togeter, but in theì
industry they still try to tell you what/where,ì
and that exactly what we're trying not to do.
...we have someone from LA, that isì
interrested in the band...would record us, havingì
the world listening to us...
WHAT DO YOU MEAN "HAVING YOU OUT OF HERE?
re: A WOMAN COMING TO LISTEN - TAKING A REPORPì
BACK OVERSEAS
...it's not a run away thing...we just wantì
to expose our music to as many people asì
possible...there is great bands in this countryì
that hasn't had people listening to there musicì
and see what they do.
re: BECAUSE OF THE CULTURAL BOYCOTT
HAS THERE BEEN OTHER IMPACT AFTER THEì
CULTURAL BOYCOTT? Deffinately...thanks to theì
Quota System...we believe in natural realì
things...
DO YOU FIND YOU HAVE TO FIGHT THE SOUTH
AFRICAN ETHIC - THAT EVERYTHING OVER THERE ISì
BETTER? One of the main facts is it's very muchì
simular here, the audience appreciates the musicì
that we play the same as they would overseas, butì
the main fact is when it comes to record sales theì
population isn't big enough for them to buy yourì
album.
The Xhosas and Sesothos wouldn't buy whiteì
rock music in the first place...whereas we didì
market our music overseas there is a widerì
listening crowd.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEMS OF GETTING A VOICEì
INTERNATIONALY? That we don't have a black personì
in our band propably, and that would beì
false...this is what it ended up and this is howì
it's working...it just happened to be that way...
WHERE DO YOU SEE SOUTH AFRICAN MUSICì
INDUSTRY AT THE MOMENT? Pregnant.
WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU GUYS?
WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
...what we hope to generate is theì
reflection of our society...
