SIMPLE MINDS CONCERT: ARRIVAL JAN SMUTS AIRPORTì
JOHANNESBURG: PRESSER: HOLIDAY INN
00.01.13 CHARLIE AND JIM SEATED AT PRESS TABLE
00.01.23 JIM re: ...First and foremoth we'reì
thrilled to be here. It's not a case of comingì
back, it's our first time.
00.01.34 Simple minds in terms of Europe we're oneì
of the most travelled bands...it hurt us not to beì
here before, we certainly had enough encouragementì
and mail from people...
00.01.52 CU JIM
00.02.00 ...our reputation proceeds us, and weì
would like to focus on our musical reputation,ì
especialy the live shows...
00.02.18 ...we're on a last lap of a worldì
tour...it doesn't mean that we're tired...
00.02.53 THERE SEEMS TO BE A LONG GAP SINCE YOURì
LAS ALBUM - ANY REASON FOR THIS GAP?
00.03.01 CHARLIE re: END OF 80's A FEW CHANGES INì
THE BAND...
00.04.20 AFTER 18 YEARS OF TOURING IS IT GETTINGì
DIFFICULT TO GO ON THE ROAD?
00.04.36 JIM: ...after the long brake, it's madeì
it enjoyable, perspective has come back again, ifì
you can't have fun doing this...at the start ofì
the 90's [the brake] we were a little in a loop, Iì
think a time away obviously has freshen thingsì
up...
...we tour so much because we genuinelyì
like playing live...going on a world tour youì
haved to put alot of things on hold...things canì
get out of balance.
WHY DO YOU CALL YOURSELVES "SIMPLEì
MINDS"?
JIM: ...one of the people than influencedì
us was Dawid Bowie, it came from a line in a songì
that he had...
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE SUPPORT ACTì
"THE ELECTRIC PETAL GROOVE MACHINE"? ...lookingì
forward seeing them.
DO YOU EXPECT YOUR RECEPTION/AUDIENCEì
WOULD BE THE SAME AS ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD?
CHARLIE: ...you can play in places likeì
East Germany...your reward is still great. Inì
fact we just came from South America [never playedì
in most of these parts], we had a fantasticì
response there. We're hoping to get a greatì
response.
THIS IS THE LAST WEEK OF YOUR TOUR -ì
YOU'RE GOING TO DO SOME TRAVELING IN SA?
JIM: ...it's quite true when we go to aì
place to work it usualy promps in a visit when weì
have som time personaly...
...Charlie and I started the band on aì
hiking trip...it would be great to see the country
FUTURE GOALS OF THE BAND - ANYTHING YOUì
WOULD WANT TO ACHIEVE YOU HAVN'T ACHIEVED?
JIM: ...plenty...to us we want to becomeì
better songwriters, we want to become a betterì
live band...we've never felt satisfied...
...we're no longer "The New Kids On Theì
Block" but compare to alot of people out thereì
we're still a little bit wet behind the ears.
YOU WERE IN SCOTLAND RECENTLY - WHAT WASì
IT GOING BACK HOME?
CHARLIE: ...pretty strange, we havn'tì
been there in a long time...
CUTAWAYS PRESS
IS YOUR NEW ALBUM BETTER THAN THE OTHERS?
JIM: yes [LAUGH] ...the new album isì
already more than a year old, we have alreadyì
moved on to new ideas...
...we wanted it [new album] to have aì
vibe/engergy it would have a life we felt theì
previous album didn't have...
...a couple of songs gave us greatì
encouragement, the future expecialy a song likeì
"Hypnotise"...we realy got exited.
BANDS THAT'S BEEN GREAT INFLUENCE ON YOURì
WORK?
CHARLIE: "Velvet Underground"/"Theì
Doors"/"Dawid Bowie"
ABOUT YOUR ANTI-APARTHEID CONCERT YOURì
SONG "MANDELA DAY" HELPED BRING ABOUT THE END OFì
APARTHEID?
JIM: No, that took us about 15 minutes toì
write...
...people ask if music can change theì
world ofcourse it can, people change things, musicì
of the arts can help to atrack attention...
