14.10.04 KASTRILS: ...illicit arms leaving SA for the Great Lakes area or anywhere else in the world and you know anything about it, please give us the information because we're very keen...to crack down on any form alledged arms smuggling from our country.
14.10.33 From time to time these rumours do surface and recently we had a meeting with officials of human right watch out of the USA becaue they've picked a lot of rumours of this kind...
14.11.00 ...we'll continue to co-operate...i.t.o cracking down on illegal arms deals from SA...
14.11.27 ...we're determined in our country to make sure that this is a clean country that we come down on crime...
14.12.07 ...we're facing our own arms in this country...a gun is a gun is a gun is a gun...it's beyond me why it's thought extremely unusual if we had to have a force in some corner of the world & of course in the Eastern part of Zaire the Great Lakes, if a SA gun was fired at a SA soldier, it's very possible but that's really not the issue...
14.12.46 because it can happen and it happens to everybody. The issue is about SA playing its responsible role in relation to a humanitarian peacekeeping effort in Africa and that's what it is about...
14.13.25 ...I think it's very likely. We've got a president of this country who madea statement very recently that in principle... Mandela agreed to SA participating in an international humanitarian peacekeeping force in the Great Lakes area, given enormity of the tradegy that's developing there...
14.13.59 ...Mbeki has made his statements...in Rome to the effect in that SA being prepared in the very very near future to play this role.
14.14.14 ...i.t.o this we should make clear that this is still at a discussion stage; it's not a uestion that SA fielding the 15 000 that the US group talked about...we're talking at present with our fellow states of the SADC region...Tanzania taking the lead...
14.15.36 ...this is still prelimanary and much is awaited from the United Nations Security Council decision which will clarify the mandate...

14.17.46 NOT HIDING BEHIND ANYTHING - MANDELA EMERGED AS WORLD LEADER TAKING A POSITIVE MORAL STANCE IN RELATION TO THE GREAT LAKES
14.17.52 ...we can't stand by and turn a blind eye to the tragedy unfolding there but at the same time we don't see ourselves as the single superman of the continent rushing in with our blue cape billowing to deal with any & every fire..,.
14.18.34 ...we were very willing to be part of our regional forces part of and not the one force...
14.18.55 ...we want to be part of something; we don't want to lead it or be the major part...
14.19.19 MODISE: ....SA doesn't intend becoming policeman of the continent or policeman of the world...if we are going to act outside the borders of this country, it will be in a collective manner... - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
