- Story Text:PRESSER: FW DE KLERK [LEADER NATIONAL PARTY] reax. to Mandela's announcement that SA is breaking diplomatic relations with Taiwan & establishing diplomatic relations with the Peoples Republic of China
02.20.06 WIDE ESTABLISHER
02.22.20 FW: ..CRITICIZING ANC GOVERNMENT...we are not seeing good management in the civil service...
02.23.15 ...a new form of arrogance & prescriptiveness which is slipping into the government's attitude in its dealings with individual businesses, where they dare not speak up where they are told how to organize their business & where threats are being used against them if they don't comply with political prescriptions in how they manage their businesses...
02.26.22 ...they surprising statement of yesterday with regard to breaking of diplomatic ties with the republic of China...
02.26.41 ...the announcement that the government has decided to break diplomatic ties with the Republic of China is disturbing. It is a very serious issue to break diplomatic ties with any country. If that country is also a good friend of SA & has done nothing wrong the matter becomes even more serious.
02.27.06 The fact that strong economic ties exist with the Republic of China from which SA has benefitted considerably over the years, makes the decision even more difficult to understand. It is furthermore disturbing that the decision was announced by the president out of the blue despite numerous assurances to the contrary that he according to many reports repeatedly gave to the Republic of China.
02.27.33 The question that remains unanswered is what has changed since President Mandela gave those assurances? What has changed since he...said...it would be immoral to do what has now been announced? Could this be further proof of the influence of the South African Communist Party on government policy which seems to be a growing influence?
02.28.11 The National Party's attitude has always been that a satisfactory international solution should be found for the issue of the China situation. I was under the impression throughout that this was also President Mandela's view. In the light of previous discussions between the president & myself, I would have expectd him to discuss this important foreign issue beforehand with me as leader of the official opposition. This did not happen.
02.28.40 The NP regrets the decison and the way in which it was made.
