INTERVIEW: MARY CREWE [DIRECTOR ATIK HILLBROW]
09.55.13 ...it does a number of things this clinic; I think it's the biggest Aids prg in the country and so we do a lot of policy development for industry, for local government. We test a number of people...main work we do is HIV testing...SDD CLINIC FAMILY PLANNING CLINIC 7 DO A LOT OF TRAINING
09.55.34 ..it's a clinic set up to do testing counselling and training.
09.55.39 WHAT SORT OF COUNSELLING ARE YOU ABLE TO OFFER PEOPLE? EXTENSIVE - PRE-TEST COUNSELLING - POST-TEST COUNSELLING - FAMILIES, CHILDREN, PARTNERS, PARENTS - RUN SUPPORT GROUPS
09.55.22 HOW CONCERNED ARE EMPLOYERS & LOCAL GOVERNMENT ABOUT THE PROBLEM? CONCERN = MISDIRECTED - WORRIED ABOUT THE ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF VIRUS
09.57.37 MANY EMPLOYEES BELIEVE THAT IF THEY TELL - WILL BE FIRED?
09.57.43 SA has surprisingly extraordinarly progressive legislation about Hiv & Aids. It's the one country where sexual preference is recognized in the Constitution, where AIDS is recognized in the Constitution as a disability, so there's very progressive legal precedent which people can use if they are discriminated or Aids is used in a prejudicial way...
09.58.04 ...educating the public that your rights can be protected & if you are fired there is legal recourse...there is a curious mismatch between saying to people we need to normalise Hiv & Aids, we need to have it as a disease which people recognize & speak freely about...but at the same time we're saying to people don't disclose your status because you're likely to be discriminated against you may suffer from social stigma and I think we have to find a way to close that gap...
09.59.54 AIDS AWARENESS - CHANGE PEOPLE'S BEHAVIOUR?
10.01.34 WHAT IS THE CURRENT LEVEL INFECTION IN SA & HOW DO YOU EXPECT THAT TO DEVELOP?
10.03.37 AFFECT ON SA ECONOMY IN NEXT 20 YEARS?
10.04.38 HEALTH SERVICES = ALREADY UNDER STRAIN - WILL IT COPE WITH THAT SORT OF LEVEL OF INFECTION?
10.06.24 ASKING ABOUT STATISTICS AGAIN...in truth I don't know...the figure that we work with...is between 8 and 10% of the population is infected; the figure that we work with in JHB is about double that. That doesn't necessarily affect the national figure...
