INTERVIEW: DR. GUILD [GENCOR]
12.08.32 HOW MANY MINERS AT GENCOR ARE CURRENTLY DYING OF AIDS? Aprroximately there is one person per day...hasn't changed much for about the last year.
12.08.52 Although we about 100 000 people working for us, different percentages in different areas...could diffe from 20% in one area to as low as 10% in another area but that is roughly the levels between 10 & 20% of the work force are presnetly infected.
12.09.16 Our labour force at the present is roughly a 100 000 people but that is over 5 different divisions.
12.10.08 It differs from operation to operation, but you see between 7 & 17% of labour actually comes from countries such as Mozambique Lesotho Swaziland.
12.10.28 I think we have a multi-facetted prg. now You've got to do basically 2 things in Aids - you've got to focus on curtailing the growth of Hiv positivity amongst the population and secondly, you've got to manage the actual impact of Aids...we have largely lost an opportunity for curtailing the growth...
12.10.52 ...however we really have to focus & answer some difficult questions how are we going to meet the burden that's going to be placed upon health care, insurance prg, replacement of labour & our prg are largely focused at making at creating sustainable prg which address those issues.
12.11.13 Again you cannot just do it as a company; you actually have to look at the community within you work which means you've got to share it with stakeholders...
12.11.40 We introduced aprg in GENCOR approximately 1985 in which we went along with was then the best western practise. Unfortunately we found a couple of years back that it wasn't actually creating any behavioural change; very good educational prg everybody knew about it bit that didn't really change their behaviour. We are at the present restructuring our prg.;
12.12.07 We're looking at te right channel the right message and that might not be in the western paradime...
12.12.26 Yes we supply condoms...free of charge...
12.12.55 I think it's too late to prevent the disease process amongst the present generation but I do think what is important is that we can prevent Aids from becomingan endemic phase...
12.14.34 ...we are seeing Hiv positivity decreases your immunity levels decreases the ability to fight infection and as a result tuberculosis is an organism that can easily be take root in your body...a large increase in our TB incidents is probably related to aids and we are beginning to see that some of our aids deaths are TB deaths...
12.15.23 AFFECT ON PRODUCTIVITY - WITHIN 5 YEARS
12.16.37 NUMBER OF DEATHS RELATED TO ACCIDENTS & NUMBER RELATED TO AIDS - MORE PEOPLE DYING OF AIDS THAN MINING ACCIDENTS...it is probably one of the biggest killers...
