- Story Text:CHEETAHS RELEASED ON AIR FORCE BASE AT LOUIS TRICHARDT TO KEEP RUNWAY SAFE FOR CHEETAH JET FIGHTERS cont.
13.01.37 AT LOVERS LANE: INTERVIEW: MITZY OPPERMAN [MANAGER CHEETAH PROJECT]...this area is known as Lovers Lane it's actually a corridor that runs through the cheetah camps in other words on both sides of these corridors we've females and towards the end we've got the male camps. Ever so often we release the males into this area especially when we can here the activities amongst the males are quite high.
13.02.08 We release the males into this area; they run up & down and when there's a female ready for mating, she'll come to the fence roll around and try to attract the male's attention. We actually release a couple of males into the enclosure and the more they then fight the more it stimulates the female to choose a male to mate with or to come in season if she's not. So this is basically just an area for the males then to see the females.
13.02.36 Defenitely ja. At the moment there's very little large enough areas to release cheetah to but we've started with the air force base at Hoedspruit some 2 years ago - we've released 2 cheetah and they've done very well; they actually keep the small game off the runway; it's very effective and now the Louis Trichardt air force base also approached us and we released another two and I think it will be.
13.03.05 We also export to safari parks & zoos in order to get new bloodlines in; we swop them with other cheetahs overseas and also to establish a new gene pool.
13.03.25 The cheetah project started off as just a breeding centre for cheetah but at the moment we also expanding to other endangered species. We are currently busy with a project on the African Wild Dog or Cape Hunting Dog;, we also have a flock of hornbills; we have some ???? African Wild Cat and hopefully we'll also be getting some Blackfooted Cats.
13.04.05 ...not just endangered species as such but also rare vulnerable species.
13.04.12 They've [cheetah] been removed from the list about 4/5 years ago, but they're still rare. Need to be conserved.
13.04.23 The King Cheetah is not a new seperate species; it's basically a mutation; it;s like a white lion...we at the moment have 3 adult King Cheetah and 2 babies;, I believe there's less than 50 in the world, very scarce.
