Used to cover up this, have been taken to build some of the houses that I've shown you up there.
01.00.47 So the building that you see with the emblem of Coke. This used to be electric sub station. Due to free enterprise system, this was converted to a little informal shop. So this is a grocery shop.
01.01.00 And this used to be a bus terminus. All the corrugated iron that used to be cover up this area have been taken to buiold some of the houses.

01.02.05 So we are just between the border line of Diekpkloof and Orlando East.
This is Diepkloof and this is Orlando East. So if you look out, so this was built in 1936. This house, side by side these are the bedroom. In the middle, that's a kitchen. The structure that you see separated from the main house, that is a toilet.
TRAFFIC DRIVING ON HIGH WAY. SLOW DOWN TO LOOK AT SMALL BRICK HOUSES WITH PEOPLE IN THE YARDS.
(CAN'T SEE WHAT LINDA'S TALKING ABOUT)
01.02.31 So the area that you see just across the road, that's the area for coloureds. Do you know what are coloureds? Mixed race between black and white.
01.02.39 So initially we used not to have a good relationship. ... We've got what we call mixed marriages whereby some of the guys this side are married this side and some are married this side. So we live as brothers and sisters.
01.03.00 Up here we've got a sign welcoming you to Soweto. In case you...
01.04.55 ...construction and development programme. So this has been introduced by President Nelson Mandela. Mandela says don't ask what the RDP can do for you, but ask what you can do for the RDP. The guys that you see over there what they do they wash cars. And each car that they wash, they get R10.

01.09.21 So this happens to be one of the soccer teams, soccer stadium. It belongs to one of the prominent soccer teams, Orlando Pirates. It used to be a home ground
ORLANDO STADIUM NOT REALLY USEABLE
01.10.27 Police know about that. Police are not well bad.. bribe. SCRAP YARD.
01.11.10 The walls, the floors, everything its concrete. These houses were meant for soldiers during the second world war. So when the war was over, soldiers vacated the place so people from the countryside came to Johannesburg looking for jobs, were given these houses. So one of them happened to be my father therefore I stay around this neighbourhood.

01.13.28 So as I said we vandalise train stations, bus terminus, this we started with this one now lately, so we're taking all the corrugated irons. so this is part of the free enterprise system people are allowed to sell. So if you look over there, started with this train station..
FENCE AROUND STATION, PAST SMALL GRASS SHOP
01.15.24 EXT CAR LINDA TALKING TO TOUR GROUP OUTSIDE HIS HOUSE
01.15.28 So there's a little that we play when we reach home. I'd like you to go to each and every room in this house and find what's missing. Something is missing in this house. It's for you to tell me what's missing inthis house. Go to any white man's house, that thing is there, if you go to all the old houses, something is missing.
01.15.46 So the rooms that you see behind the yard, initially when mum and dad arrived, this was not there, so mum and dad dipped into their pockets to erect what you see. This used to be my sisters room. So mum has converted this into a little informal shop. Andso its a grocery shop. The other rooms are my mum and my brothers rooms.

01.40.21 KOPPIE GETS STEEPER. VIEW UP
01.40.47 The house that you see over here, this is Winnie Mandela's house. This house was last built in 1989. So when built this house she had a hope that when the old man was released..unfortunately when Mandela was released he didn't want to stay in this house, but preferably in the old house, so I'll show you the old house.
01.41.04 So during the time when Mandela was staying in that house, that was ANC leadership task to try and persuade Mandela to come and stay here since there wasn't much security. It was shortly after Chris Hani was assassinated. The South African communist Party leader. So it wasn't safe at the time, so Mandela had to come and stay here. That wasn't for long. That was the time just before the election . He had to ....
CLOSE UPS ON LINDA TALKING AND PAX WATCHING
01.42.19 OTHER TOUR BUSES DRIVE PAST WINIES HOUSE
So where we are, we are in beverly hills. That's beverly hills. So that's due to the nice houses that you see over here. That this area was an elite area.
01.42.40 If you just browse around, the bluish green building that you see over there. That;s a swimming pool. About a radius of 5 km's that's the only pool we have in this area..
01.43.05 CLOSE UP OF WINNIE'S HOUSE
PULL OUT TOSHOW WALL, KOPPIE IN FOREGROUND
01.43.09 So from here I'll go past Bishop Tutu's h ouse and take you to Mandela's old house.

So he doesn' stay here. He's the chairperson of the Truth and REconciliation Commision. So hopefully when he comes back that's where he's going to be staying.
01.46.38 Did you know that he's no longer a bishop.
PEOPLE STANDING IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE, PAINTING
01.46.56 BEAUTIFUL HOUSES IN BEVERLY HILLS
So on my left, this is Beverly Hills, and on my right that's Orlando West. So the house that you see up front with the creamish colour is that's mnadela's old house
TOURIST TAKING PHOTO AS WE DRIVE PAST. TOURIST VAN PARTKED OUTSIDE HOUSE
So Mandela last lived in this house in 1955 when he adopted an ANC document known as Freedom Charter. So the Nationalist Party didn't like the content of the charter thus mandela was forced to go into hiding. So he went on hiding from 55 up until 1961 when he was arrested. And from 61 to 63 he was tried and a sentence was passed. He stayed in jail up until he was released in 1990.
COMBI TURNING THE CORNER AROUND MANDELA'S HOUSE.
01.47.34 So during the time when Mandela was in jail, Winnie was staying here. I wonder if you've heard about allegation whereby Winnie was accused of killing a 13 year old boy, Stompie Seipeng. That wasn't proven in a court of law therefore we cannot say that she did it, or she did not do it.
01.47.56 .. soccer team, but later on it was converted into sort of a mafia gang. They were going around the township harassing people, terorising people. So if you are against their will you will be taken in here and tortured. So it's understood that some of the tortures were approved by Winnie herself. That's why the suspiciaon it's still hiding on her.
01.48.13 So presently nobody's staying in this house, only the guards and the gardeners are staying in this house. So they intend toconvert this house to what we call a national monument.
CAR DRIVING SLOWOY AGAIN.
01.48.28 Would you like to have a photo of the house?

01.51.13 hI SCHOOL SIGN THROUGH FENCE, PULL OUT
01.54.08 WALKING TO 76 MEMORIAL
01.54.19 The gathering its illegal, we give you five minutes to disperse. Not necessarily meaning five minutes, they started counting from one to five and they started shooting indiscriminately with live bullets. So the first person who happened to get shot was a 16 year old boy Hasting Ndlovu and the youngest of them all was Hector Peterson.
01.55.01 If you look on the memorial stone over here. Extreme left, that's hector's sister, right in the middle this is one of the brave demonstrators that happened tobe here. Ever since this man went to exile in Nigeria, even today his presence are not known. He was last seen in Nigeria. This guy used to to stay just behind the containers, there's a white house. That's where he used to stay, so even today, his presence are not know. The truch and reconciliation commission are trying to locate the whereabouts of this man.
01.55.49 All the exiles... the one whose being carried that's Hector, at the time he was gunned down. He was rushed up there. There was a clinic called Mandela Sisulu clinic. On arrival Hector was certified dead. So in this day only about 360 kids were gunned down around Soweto.
01.55.45 I wonder if you've watched the movies SArafina as well as Cry Freedom. Have you? They're showing other parts of Soweto where the shooting incident occurred. So they chose..
01.56.06 So this was erected shortly after the political organisations were unbanned andt his was erected by the ANC. If you look jusrt behind these paintings that I have said they represent the fallen heros. These are the birthdates and the names of these kids. These kids are still alive but their parents passed away. That's why they say these resemble the fallen heros.
01.56.26 So over we've got an exhibition going on. You'll be going in to these containers. In one of the containers you'll see a poster of a young boy witha bullet wound right between the eyes. ....
01.56.50 .. they're showing what was happening on this day and years after that. HOw blacks were treated and how they used to retaliate. So I'll just be explaining two or three pictures and the rest you'll see.

02.39.12 So normally what is that normally we've got three precisions whereby the person is buried, slaughter a cow or goat, depending. If you are a youngster, a young generation just like Linda, they'll slaughter a goat. If you an elderly guy just like mum, they'll slaughter a cow. And you'd have a proceeding whereby... what they'll do....
02.39.45 do you see that tombstone over there. it has been covered with a plastic, a yellow plastic over there. What happens is its gonna be unveiled. So to open that...

02.46.28 JOE SLOVO
02.47.45 (Max) Welcome to Hero's Acre. This whole acre is called Hero's Acre.
Andthe tombstone that you see her in front of you is where Joe Slovo, the leader of the South African Communist Party has been buried here. This is the actual grave. And this was unveiled here a couple of months ago by the president. The words that you see on the tombstone here is.... it's a respect that you give toa leader, a person who contributed to the community. So on the day when they buried Joe Slovo, everybody was here. I was running a tour but we could not just come here. There were lots and lots of peole here.
02.48.43 PAX STANDING WATCHING, LOOKING AROUND AVALON CEMETERY.
02.48.27 So Mandela whoever will be buried here. So this is what you call Avalon Cemetery. The second biggest in Soweto. As you can see, it's just another big city. Huge, bit city. All what you see ove there it's the funeral that are taking on. And just over here, there'll be a funeral just now, probably a person will be buried this afternoon. Because they've got funerals in the morning and the afternoon.
