03.21.24 So ladies and gentlemen this is a shebeen. A shebeen is an illegal drinking pub. So in 1887, they came laws where thye discouraged people from prohibiting people fromselling. So we are not allowed to sell or drink liquor. It's because some miners thought that much time was wasted while people were drunk so they started to, say blacks shouldn't drink, because they are wasting their time.
03.21.56 So a shebeen is an illegal drinking pub, this is just an ordinary house, converted to.. so people are selling. people late in the evening will come.

04.13.19 Because we were able to go and talk to the people, socialise with them briefly and see different areas. There's 21 suburbs in this region. So to go to more than just one region was quite good.
04.13.46 It's slightly different because I'd been here for about 6 months now. I knew vaguely that I was going to get on the tour and everything. But I still wasn't really prepared for feelings of guilt when we were in the Nelson Mandela Squatter camp. It was Ivy who said, you never say hello to people. Because I feel guilty, and I do. It's a shame that people have to live like that now
04.14.25 There's aspects of that, but I think with the tour that Max has put together, taking us around. it was really good to meet the people and to speak to them and they're so friendly and it was fairly uplifting living in such appalling circumstances some of the people yet they're so friendly and happy and getting on with their lives.
04.14.39 I didn't think we were being vey intrusive.
04.14.53 No we'd been talking about doing it.
We wan'ted to try and fit it in if at all possible.
04.15.02 We saw more than we thought we would see to be honest.
I think it was for me, I was a bit sruprised at how positive everybody is. I expected the people to be a bit more depressed. So it was a real positive energy which I thought was great.
