- Story Text:Thousands of opposition protesters took the streets of Caracas on Monday (June 19) as part of continued demonstrations against the crisis-plagued government of President Nicolas Maduro.
Using makeshift slingshots, protesters fired tear gas canisters at authorities who quickly moved to disperse the crowds with water cannon and more tear gas.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the capital, hundreds of government supporters turned out to counter the opposition's protest.
Carrying red flags and images of former leader Hugo Chavez, the government supporters called for the constituent assembly.
At least 72 people have been killed since hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in protests that began in April demanding elections, the release of opposition prisoners and calling on Maduro to accept foreign aid to alleviate food and medicine shortages. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
