It was a very, very intense fire that spread very quickly and that's what needs to be mentioned really. Fires don't spread that quickly. Fires are contained, especially a flat fire. I've been in the job for 10 years, I've attended many fires in tower blocks similar to this and they stay within a flat. They are contained and they are contained for between 20 and 40 minutes. So for something to spread this quickly and this dangerously, something's gone seriously wrong, which is what we've seen here." POLICE CORDON FIRE ENGINES PARKED IN CORDONED-OFF AREA

- Story Text: Firefighters fought to hold back their tears on Monday (June 19) as they gathered in west London to observe a minute's silence paying tribute to the victims of a blazing tower block fire that left at least 79 dead.
"We tried, we're sorry" read the words on a red t-shirt that was laid by firefighters near the memorial wall where people have been leaving flowers and written messages for the victims and missing people of the Grenfell Tower fire.
The emergency services personnel were joined by men and women up and down the country as people came together to remember those who lost their lives and were injured when the fire took hold in the early hours of Wednesday (June 14).
The fire broke out in the 24-storey tower, a social housing block in Kensington, west London and spread with speed, tearing through the building with residents trapped inside.
Fire Brigade regional representative Lucy Masoud, who has worked as a firefighter for 10 years, said the fire was unprecedented and should not have spread so quickly.
On the streets, there is anger over a blocked renovation project that did not install safety devices such as sprinklers.
Suspicions have grown that flammable materials were used to clad the building and accelerated the spread of the fire. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
