We would have just said 'Who thinks that greenhouse gases are not a pollutant'? And those that would say 'Yes, me.', I would hook their mouth up to an exhaust pipe, turn on the engine, and I guarantee you that within a minute they would have tapped out. And they would have said (coughing) 'Absolutely right, it is a pollutant'. Okay. But I mean, let's go back to reality here." PEOPLE IN AUDIENCE (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTOR AND POLITICIAN, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, SAYING: "I remain optimistic because United States is not Washington, it is not one man. And while one man may have turned his back on Paris and environmental progress, our states and our cities have not. Our colleges and universities have not. Our corporations and our businesses have not. Our scientists and our engineers have not. And most importantly - our people have not. As a matter of fact, by a two to one margin, the American people are totally, and remain, committed to the Paris agreement." - Story Text: Action movie star and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger criticised Donald Trump's decision to abandon the Paris climate deal on Tuesday (June 20).
Schwarzenegger made his comments in a speech in Vienna at the Austrian World Summit, an environmental platform aimed at bringing together NGO's, businesses and leading politicians in creating sustainable development and tackling climate change.
"Let me be perfectly clear - one man will not stop our progress. One man will not bring back the dirty energy of the past. And one man will not defeat us. We will succeed, we will win, and we will create a future for our children and grandchildren that we can be proud of," Schwarzenegger told the audience, referring to Trump's decision earlier this month to pull the United States out of the landmark Paris agreement signed by 195 nations of the world.
Trump has said participating in the pact would undermine the U.S. economy, wipe out jobs, weaken national sovereignty and put the United States at a permanent disadvantage.
However, many U.S. cities and regions have since vowed to honour commitments from the Paris agreement in spite of President Trump's opposition, and Schwarzenegger said that this gave him optimism for the future.
