- Story Text: Actor and United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Special Envoy, Angelina Jolie marked World Refugee Day on Tuesday (June 20) visiting teenaged refugee girls in Nairobi, Kenya.
Jolie met around 20 girls who fled unaccompanied or split from their parents while fleeing conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Somalia, Burundi and Rwanda, UNHCR said in a statement.
During the meeting the girls told Jolie their personal stories of suffering sexual and gender-based violence and giving birth after being raped or being made pregnant.
"The horror of sexual violence is compounded when it is carried out by someone in uniform who has taken an oath to protect," Jolie said during news conference.
Jolie has called for greater effort to document and prosecute crimes of rape and sexual violence in war.
Troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo faced accusations of systematic rape in the central Kasai region this year.
And African Union and French peacekeepers have faced investigations over rape and sexual abuse in recent years.
The UNHCR says Kenya is home to nearly 491,000 refugees from neighbouring Somalia, South Sudan, DRC, Burundi and other countries in the region.
June 20 marks World Refugee Day, an occasion that draws attention to those who have been displaced around the globe. The U.N. reports that there are about 65 million people who were displaced by conflict and persecution. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
