- Story Text:OAS (Organisation of American States) Secretary General Luis Almagro called on the body's nation states to stay true to the values of the regional body during its General Assembly in Cancun on Monday (June 19), as the Venezuelan crisis weighs on diplomats across the Americas.
Foreign ministers from across the Americas failed to reach an agreement on Monday (June 19) on a resolution criticising Venezuela's government.
Ministers from the 34-nation Organisation of American States (OAS) had met in Cancun in bid to hash out a joint statement on the political and economic crisis rocking Venezuela.
But support for the resolution came short.
Speaking at the end of day one of the meeting, Almagro told delegates that many were still dying in the Americas to secure democracy and freedom.
Mexico, the United States and other countries were pushing the OAS to adopt a resolution on Venezuela that defends representative democracy.
Host, President Enrique Pena Nieto called on countries to reaffirm their commitment to the OAS' ideals.
Mexico, along with the United States and others, has been pushing for a tough resolution for months but has not won enough support, with many small countries grateful to Venezuela for soft oil loans.
Venezuela's socialists have long enjoyed the support of left-leaning governments in Latin America loathe to back measures they see as meddling in a sovereign country by an organisation they consider an arm of U.S. foreign policy. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
