Eight months later, it remains brutal, it's no doubt about that. You know, the world knows what's the enemy we're dealing with. It's (Islamic State) the enemy with no humanity, it's the enemy who respects nobody, that is more than content to murder civilians in great, great numbers. What I would say is that's the sign, that's the evidence of a failing organisation. They are desperate and they are increasingly resorting to desperate measures. They know the end is near." I think we would be delighted if it were the case. We have no information to corroborate that, so I think that leaves me confident that Baghdadi is probably still at large. But what I would say is that great many of his lieutenants have been killed. He is ever more isolated, his ability to genuinely lead his organisation is open to question. So if you are a Daesh (Islamic State) fighter in West Mosul right now, if you are Daesh fighter in Raqqa, where our partner forces again are attacking, I don't sense you would feel as though you are being led by Baghdadi. I suspect you feel isolated, I suspect you feel deserted and you know this is only going to end one way." And it's been really striking talking to people. There seems to be a genuine, mutual trust between the security services, the security forces and the local population. All of them, I've had it multiple times today, the mutual respect. That's fantastic." - Story Text: The British deputy commander of the international coalition visited the eastern part of Mosul on Wednesday (June 21) attending a meeting with advisers from Iraqi forces and talking to vendors in a local market.
Major General Rupert Jones said the battle of Mosul was brutal and Islamic State was the enemy with no humanity and no respect, content to murder civilians in great numbers.
"They are desperate and they are increasingly resorting to desperate measures. They know the end is near," Jones said.
U.S.-backed Iraqi forces on Wednesday began a push towards the mosque in Mosul where Islamic State declared a self-styled caliphate three years ago, military officials said. The Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) were 200-300 metres (yards) away from the mosque,
The international coalition is providing air and ground support to the Mosul offensive that started in October last year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
