- Story Text: Amid prayers and song, residents in El Salvador welcomed their newly-named cardinal at the El Salvador International Airport in San Luis Talpa on Tuesday (July 4).
Seventy-four-year-old Gregorio Rosa Chavez was named cardinal last week by Pope Francis. Together with Chavez, Francis elevated another four Roman Catholic prelates from outside Italy and the Vatican to the rank of cardinal, the elite group of churchmen who are his closest advisers and can enter a conclave to choose his successor.
El Salvadoran President Salvador Sanchez Ceren, greeted Chavez at the airport. Afterwards, both posed for photographers at a special honour guest room at the airport.
Chavez, who said he came with a message of hope, joy and peace from Francis, then left to huge cheers from the crowd. Parishioners said they hoped Chavez would bring hope to the violent Central American country. El Salvador is one of the world's deadliest countries outside a war zone. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
