- Story Text: German Chancellor Angela Merkel's chief of staff and key ally Peter Altmaier of the CDU came to the rescue of Hamburg mayor Olaf Scholz of the SPD on Monday (July 10), repeating earlier remarks that only "unscrupulous rioters" were to blame for the anti-G20 violence.
Mayor Olaf Scholz, serving a second term since 2015, has faced calls for resignation from CDU members in his city's parliament.
The Free Democrats (FDP), who are no longer represented in the federal parliament but hope to re-enter it after the September 24 national election, demanded the SPD distance itself from "this kind of violent leftist extremism."
The SPD challenger to Merkel in the September election, Martin Schulz said the anti-capitalist militants who protested against the G20 summit in Hamburg at the weekend had acted in a "terrorist-style" fashion. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
