- Story Text:A handful of green-fingered Palestinian women from Jerusalem's Old City are putting their skills to use through a business initiative aimed at helping them into the local workforce.
With educational support from the Burj Luq Luq Social Centre Society eight women took up the opportunity to be horticulturally trained over a three year period, also receiving business training.
Their training has finally reached completion.
"This project was created for women in Jerusalem's Old City and specifically for those who live at Lion's Gate neighbourhood; who are economically disadvantaged, who are unemployed house wives, who do not leave their houses and most of the times they stay at home. We opened these two projects to support them economically and they would leave their houses, head to work and be able to support themselves and have an income," said Rola Nejam, an administrative assistant at Burj.
Many of the women who struggle to make ends meet have been delighted with the opportunity to learn more about cultivating plants for financial purposes.
"We learnt how to repair, plant, information on seeds and many other things. After three years, we started to apply everything we had learned. We have an agricultural engineer, who trained us how to plant seeds and everything else and we continued from there by ourselves. He comes from time to time to provide us with information and as you can see the project has started and is going well," said Burj trainee Sameeha Dabagh.
Although the women have not yet broken even, they are confident about their abilities and hopeful about the future of their greenhouse businesses.
