If they keep it up (GIVES THUMBS UP SIGN). I hope they do. I mean usually my train gets in 10 minutes late there-ish but there's always a swing, so hopefully my line is not affected, that's all you can really do about it." - Story Text: Commuters got their first taste of what has been dubbed the "summer of hell" on Monday (July 10), facing potential extended delays as repair work began on railway lines into New York City's Pennsylvania Station, the busiest passenger train hub for the business capital of the United States.
But commuters who talked to Reuters said the first day ran smoothly.
Amtrak, which is undertaking the massive repair program, rents track and station space to New Jersey Transit and the MTA's Long Island Rail Road.
Each railroad has devised separate contingency plans to work around the repairs, including reduced fares and alternate routes into New York including ferries, buses and PATH trains, a subway line running between Manhattan and New Jersey.
All have canceled some routes or services into Penn Station, rerouted others, and warned commuters to expect delays on remaining trains until all tracks are up and running again. The terminal serves 600,000 riders a day. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
