VARIOUS OF NEWS CONFERENCE IN PROGRESS (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT, EMMANUEL MACRON, SAYING: "After the terrorist attacks we suffered -- but which, I say it again, threaten all big cities, and not so big ones, in the world -- we knew how to react and we never stopped organising events. There have been several events organised since the Paris attacks: the marathon, the Tour de France stages and arrivals, of which we'll have more soon, the Euro 2016, a few weeks after the Paris attacks there was the COP21 (climate conference) which is not a sporting event but which brought the planet, in every sense of the word, to Paris. All of them were successful with security provision which was up to the job." VARIOUS OF NEWS CONFERENCE IN PROGRESS (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT, EMMANUEL MACRON, SAYING: "This is exactly what characterises it (the bid) and what I think makes it strong, what drove me to support it back when I was a minister at the finance ministry, it relies on what already exists -- 95 percent of the structures are existing or temporary structures, so we are not going to build white elephants with this project." Macron has traded barbs with Trump over climate change policy, calling his decision to leave the Paris accord on climate change a mistake.
Trump was not present in Lausanne, though heads of state had never before attended this July meeting for Olympic bids.
On Friday (July 14), Trump will be will be attending the Bastille Day festivities at the invitation of newly-elected Macron.
In Lausanne, Macron also said France was well equipped to deal with potential terror attacks when hosting large events - he cited the Tour de France, Euro 2016 and COP21 as prime examples.
Macron stressed that Paris' Olympic bid would try to avoid any "white elephants" if they are awarded the Games.
Paris is proposing a compact Games with almost every venue temporary or in place but still needs to build an athletes' village, the biggest project of the bid. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
