- Story Text: The fifth evolution of New York Fashion Week: Men's kicked off on Monday (July 10) with designers showing their Spring/Summer 2018 collections.
New York based designer David Hart is showing his tenth collection and found inspiration from Cuba tourism.
Making its New York debut was Head of State by Taofeea Abijako. The Nigerian born and raised designer used the history of his country as motivation for his spring collection.
"This collection was pretty much inspired by colonialism and post colonialism in western Africa. And also referencing the youth culture during that time period. So I took inspiration from Africa contemporary photographers like Malick Sidibe, Seydou Keita. And they pretty much captured the attitude of Africans post colonialism and how like, they reacted to western influence," explained Abijako.
Veteran designer Michael Rubin of Krammer and Stoudt also used his surroundings to create a line with a nostalgic feel. Rubin said the clothes were similar to what he used to wear as a teen when surfing in Mexico.
The three day parade of shows will feature collection debuts by Raf Simons and Boss, while Gustav von Aschenbach, Barbara Sanchez-Kane of Sanchez-Kane are among those showing for the first time in New York.
