- Story Text: Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Kurds ignored Baghdad's offer of amnesty to rebels and continued to head for Turkey and Iran on Saturday (April 6) .
Almost 250,000 Iraqi refugees of Kurdish origin were estimated to have crossed the mountainous border into Turkey by Friday (April 5), fleeing forces loyal to Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
Fights broke out on Saturday at a refugee camp for Iraqi Kurds at Kayadibi in Turkey. The refugees were queueing for bread provided by the Turkish government when some broke ranks and began fighting to get their share of food. Turkish troops fired in the air to restore order.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Kurtecebe Alptemocin said on Saturday that about 1,500 Iraqis had died of hunger, disease and cold while fleeing toward the Turkish border.
Speaking at a news conference, Alptemocin said there were 280,000 Iraqis massed at 14 different points along the Turkish border. He added that about 1 million refugees were still in a 60 kilometre (35 mile) area along the Turkish border.
The Turkish government has said it cannot cope alone with a further influx of refugees. Turkey has appealed to the international community to send food, shelter and medicine to the area. Reports from Turkey and Iran say about two million of Iraq's 3.5 million people of Kurdish origin are fleeing towards their borders. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
