- Story Text: Allied planes on Wednesday (February 20) continued their air attacks on Iraq's capital, Baghdad.
The latest assault began shortly after Iraqi Foreign Minister Tareq Aziz returned to Baghdad with a Soviet proposal to end the war. Explosions rocked part of the city every five minutes for more than four hours.
Iran's official Islamic Republic News Agency reported panicked residents rushing to escape to nearby villages. It also reported bombing in other Iraqi cities. Earlier, Baghdad Radio said Iraq's morale was unbroken and it declared that victory on the battlefield could be achieved "with God's help".
British military sources said on Wednesday that the allies were close to achieving their aim of cutting Iraqi fighting capability by half before launching a ground war. Up to a half of the Iraqi army's tanks, artillery and armoured vehicles were reported to have been either destroyed, disabled or unserviceable. Ammunition and fuel storage sites had been smashed and supply routes eroded, the sources said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
