- Story Text: Iraqi ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Abdul Amir Al-Anbari said on Wednesday (April 17) that Iraq would co-operate with the decision by Britain, France and the United States (US) to build camps in northern Iraq to aid Kurdish refugees.
Al-Anbari said he did not believe the decision was the first step towards a large-scale occupation of Iraqi territory.
UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar met French President Francois Mitterrand in Paris and said he would be contacting the Iraqis to see how they felt about a foreign military presence.
British Prime Minister John Major said he did not believe Iraq would attack the Kurds, who had fled after a failed rebellion. He said the Kurdish resistance should not use the camps as bases. They were being established to help people who may not otherwise survive and it was necessary to act immediately, he said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
