- Story Text: United States (US) troops were expected to complete their withdrawal from occupied southern Iraq on Monday (April 15). US tanks and troops moved from their positions south of the Euphrates River into a demilitarised zone being set up by the United Nations (UN) along the Iraqi-Kuwaiti border.
The buffer zone -- which extends 10 kilometres (six miles) into Iraq, and five kilometres (three miles) into Kuwait -- was established under the formal Gulf War ceasefire which came into effect last Thursday.
Around 40,000 US troops who were stationed in southern Iraq are now within the zone. They are expected to hand over to the 1,440-strong UN observer force by the end of April.
As the US troops left Iraq, hundreds of Iraqi refugees waving banners urged them to stay. One banner read: "Please clean Iraq from the Wicked Saddam and his bad system." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
