- Story Text: Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said on Thursday (July 13) that the possible sale of Patriot missile defense systems from the United States still needed further approval.
The U.S. State Department has approved the possible sale of the defense systems worth $3.9 billion to Romania, a Pentagon agency said in a statement on Tuesday (July 11).
The prime contractors would be Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said.
The purchase would be a key part of the European Union country's plan to modernise its military, benefiting from a gradual increase in annual spending.
The defence budget in Romania - a NATO member since 2004 and one of Washington's staunchest allies in eastern Europe along with Poland - was 1.7 percent of gross domestic product in 2016 and was set at 2.0 percent this year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
