- Story Text: Jordan, one of Iraq's few Arab sympathisers, on Thursday (January 17) officially condemned the start of the Gulf war by the United States (US) and its allies.
The US-led air attacks on Iraq and occupied Kuwait began less than 24 hours after the United Nations (UN) deadline for Iraq to withdraw from the tiny Gulf state expired.
An official statement from Jordan said the raids were an attack on an Arab Moslem country and people. But King Hussein urged his people to continue welcoming foreigners in Jordan.
Many Jordanians appeared to back Iraq in the conflict.
King Hussein on Thursday met Jordanian officials to discuss the Gulf conflict. He later inspected an air raid bunker.
Crown Prince Hassan of Jordan on Thursday reiterated his country's refusal to let Israeli planes fly over Jordanian air space in the event of an attack on Iraq.
A few hours after Hassan spoke, Iraq launched as many as ten Scud missiles against Israel.
