- Story Text:With seven performances under his belt, U.S. President Barack Obama will try one last time to bring the house down at the annual White House correspondents' dinner on Saturday (April 30), a night of playful ribbing of both politicians and the news media.
The black-tie event, which Obama has previously joked is "a night when Washington celebrates itself," brings together journalists and media moguls, Hollywood stars and policy wonks and the powerbrokers from Capitol Hill.
Actress Sela Ward, who plays a U.S. president in the upcoming "Independence Day: Resurgence" said she was looking forward to seeing the world's collide.
"I think sports figures, politicians, and entertainers all want to be one or the other that they are not so it's always very intriguing to look across the field and see a kindred spirit in all those arenas," she said.
For Obama, who is scheduled to speak around 10:20 p.m. ET (0220 GMT Sunday), it will be his final correspondents' dinner as a sitting president. Comedian Larry Wilmore, who hosts a show on the cable outlet Comedy Central, will take to the podium after the president's remarks.
"It's bittersweet, because I think he's been an amazing leader," said Indian actress and star of ABC's "Quantico" Priyanka Chopra . "And I'm looking forward to seeing what this would be all about. I'm meeting new people. I'm not from America but it's really fun to meet such an eclectic lot of people."
Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher said she was also sorry that this was Obama's final correspondents' dinner.
"I don't think his type will never come back. His values are not replaceable," she said.
In previous years, Obama has taken on Washington gridlock, political rivals and presidential hopefuls with usually light-hearted, but sometimes pointed, jokes.
Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump, who won't be at the dinner, could surface in Obama's monologue.
His sons Eric and Donald Trump Jr. were both in attendance.
"I guess this will be a unique one for us just because this is the first one I have been a fly on the wall as part of a political movement and it's not a campaign anymore. It's really a movement. So I guess it will be interesting. We'll see. It will be fun," Donald Trump Jr. said.
The dinner has drawn criticism from some who feel that partying with sources is not conducive to hard-hitting journalism. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
