- Story Text: The second annual Latin American Music Awards honored top Spanish language artists with up and coming band CNCO, Prince Royce and Enrique Iglesias winning two awards each on Thursday (October 6) in Los Angeles.
Hosted by Mexican singer and actress Lucero, the show dedicated a heart-felt tribute to late singer Juan Gabriel, one of the highlights of the night with Spanish singer Shaila Durcal performing one of Gabriel's most beloved songs, "Amor Eterno." Don Francisco and Mexican singers Angelica Maria, Aida Cuevas and Lila Down also performed in the tribute.
Politics and Hurricane Matthew were also part of the conversation during the show from Cuban group Gente de Zona dedicating their award to their home country to Kate Del Castillo enticing Latinos to get out and vote on the upcoming presidential elections to former Miss Universe and present day Donald Trump foe Alicia Machado joking about the border with co-presenter Luis Ernesto Franco.
Gente de Zona, who won Favorite Album Tropical also dedicated their award to the late Jose Fernandez.
"First of all I want to thank all our Latinos and God for giving us the opportunity of being here. This award, first of all I want to dedicate to our recent great loss, our professional baseball player Jose Fernandez and our other dedication is for all Cubans who are dealing with the hurricane that just hit Cuba and as soon as this award show is over we're turning our attention to our country to help all those people who lost their homes and lost everything," said vocalist Alexander Delgado.
Machado and Luis Ernesto Franco bantered back and forth about the former beauty queen's American citizenship, ending with Franco asking her if she was voting, to which she replied, "Of course I am."
On that same note, Mexican actress Kate Del Castillo implored Latinos to vote in the upcoming presidential elections.
"We are a month away from the presidential elections, the most important for Hispanics in this country, we need to make very clear the importance and value of our vote. It's that important that all of us, the Hispanics have the power to decide who will be the next president of this country," said Del Castillo.
The night ended with a rousing tribute to the late Juan Gabriel who died in August.
"Juan Gabriel used to say, when one dies the only thing you take with you is what you gave and all of us you were touched by him know that what he gave was love, he loved life and all of its moments, he loved music, he loved his friends, he loved his children and over all of this he loved his fans," said TV host Don Francisco. The tribute continued with Mexican singer and actress Angelica Maria reciting Juan Gabriel's legacy.
The musical tribute was headlined by Spanish singer Shaila Durcal, daughter of singer Rocio Durcal, performing "Amor Eterno," she was then joined on stage by Mexican singers Lila Down and Aida Cuevas.
Other performers included musical Pitbull, Prince Royce, Niki Jam and Flo Rida, Miguel Bose and La Santa Cecilia, Gerardo Ortiz, Jesse & Joy and Franco de Vita, among others.
