ACTOR LOU DIAMOND PHILLIPS ACTRESS LILY COLLINS MUSICIAN LENNY KRAVITZ WALKING AND GREETING DIRECTOR STEPHEN GAGHAN (SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR, STEPHEN GAGHAN, SAYING: "I mean it's complete fantasy and nonsense. It makes no sense whatsoever. It's funny, though, if you know the academy, it's like basically every year they get it completely wrong except the year you win. 'You know they're not such idiots, after all' and then they go back to 'Oh they got it completely wrong'. That's how everyone feels." ACTRESS AND SINGER JANELLE MONAE DESIGNER AND DIRECTOR TOM FORD ACTOR AARON ECKHART (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTOR AARON ECKHART, SAYING: "Well because there's so many people that work so hard during the year to tell their stories. It's so hard to get a movie made. It's very difficult and then to make a good movie it's extra difficult so here we are today with the best of the best, the best talent all across the board, from actors, directors, producers, cinematographers, art directors, everything and we're here to celebrate that hard work and for some reason some people like to watch it." ACTRESS NATALIE PORTMAN KIDMAN TALKS WITH PRODUCER JEFFERY KATZENBERG ACTOR EDDIE MURPHY (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTOR, EDDIE MURPHY, SAYING: "It makes you feel old. Yeah, it makes you feel old. Yeah, because it's a career achievement and they're looking at all of your stuff so it makes you feel… The last two or three things I've come out for it's like 'You're getting the old award, you're getting the old award. How do you feel?'. 'It's wonderful.'" ACTRESS NAOMIE HARRIS (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTRESS, NAOMIE HARRIS, SAYING: "It was without a doubt was one of the most challenging roles I've ever taken on but also one of the most rewarding because I learned things about myself. I learned that I could do things I didn't know that I could do. I'm miss non-alcohol drinking, miss non-smoking, non-coffee drinking even so to play a crack addict is a massive departure for me so I really learned a lot about myself. I could do anything now." MCCONAUGHEY (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTOR, MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY, SAYING: "Well I'm standing here real proud of the film that we made, real proud of the work that everyone did on it, and real proud and happy with the work that I got to do on it for the last four years so if I wasn't happy with that, if I didn't have a great experience, if I didn't love the movie, if I didn't like the people I got to work with, this would not be near as fun because I'd have to be faking it. I'd have to be acting. I'm not acting. I'm happy to be here supporting this film so that makes it a whole lot easier." ACTOR HUGH GRANT (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTOR, HUGH GRANT, SAYING: "Well I'm relieved more than anything because when I signed up for it, I was terrified and I was intimidated by Stephen Frears, and I was very intimidated by the idea of Meryl Streep and I was convinced that either one would fire me in the first week, so I'm just glad I got away with it." TELEVISION HOST JAMES CORDEN (SOUNDBITE) (English) HOLLYWOOD FILM AWARDS HOST, JAMES CORDEN, SAYING: "I don't know what it is. This is my second year hosting it and I still don't really know what it is. I honestly don't know. A lot of stars, a lot of famous people, jokes from us and we'll all be home by eight, so lovely!" - Story Text: Award season begun in Hollywood on Sunday (November 6, 2016) with the 20th annual Hollywood Film Awards.
Although not a reliable indicator of what the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) will deliver for the all-important Oscars, the awards have picked out winners without nominations for the directors, actors and other film talent they believe are worthy of honor in 2016.
Award season consists of numerous award shows from the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Golden Globes to the BAFTAs and the final award show of the season, the Academy Awards.
"(An) award show is part of a kind of sharing the movies that we're making," said Bryce Dallas Howard on the red carpet. "Sharing the work that we're all doing as a community and it's also a chance for us to support one another and be proud of one another and acknowledge one another and so that's important plus it's good to be forced to pull yourself together once in a while and go 'Oh, you know, a dress!'."
Writer director Stephen Gaghan, who won an Oscar in 2001 for writing 'Traffic' and is currently tipped for award season with his film 'Gold', has experienced the highs and lows of award season and said on the red carpet "It's complete fantasy and nonsense. It makes no sense whatsoever. It's funny, though, if you know the academy, it's like basically every year they get it completely wrong except the year you win. 'You know they're not such idiots, after all' and then they go back to 'Oh they got it completely wrong'. That's how everyone feels."
Golden Globe nominee Aaron Eckhart had a different feeling about award shows, saying "It's so hard to get a movie made. It's very difficult and then to make a good movie it's extra difficult so here we are today with the best of the best, the best talent all across the board, from actors, directors, producers, cinematographers, art directors, everything and we're here to celebrate that hard work and for some reason some people like to watch it."
The winners included Best Actor for Tom Hanks ('Sully'), Best Actress for Natalie Portman ('Jackie'), Best Supporting Actor for Hugh Grant ('Florence Foster Jenkins') and Best Supporting Actress for Nicole Kidman ('Lion'). The Hollywood Film Awards also honor new talent in the industry with Naomie Harris ('Moonlight') getting the Hollywood Breakout Actress Award, Lily Collins ('Rules Don't Apply') getting the New Hollywood Award and Tom Ford ('Nocturnal Animals') getting the Hollywood Breakthrough Director Award.
The winner of the special award for Hollywood Career Achievement went to comedian Eddie Murphy, who has taken a dramatic turn in the recent 'Mr. Church'.
"It makes you feel old. Yeah, it makes you feel old," said Murphy. "The last two or three things I've come out for it's like 'You're getting the old award, you're getting the old award. How do you feel?'. 'It's wonderful,'" he said while gurning like an old man and then laughing.
British actor and television presenter James Corden once again presented the awards but wasn't sure how they fitted into award season.
"I don't know what it is. This is my second year hosting it and I still don't really know what it is. I honestly don't know," he said. "A lot of stars, a lot of famous people, jokes from us and we'll all be home by eight, so lovely!" - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
