- Story Text:'Gone Girl' star Rosamund Pike was full of praise for BAFTAs Breakthrough Brits initiative - saying it helps new talent to gain "respect" - as the 2016 list was revealed in London.
The scheme, which started in 2013, recognises rising UK creative talent in film, TV and games and offers them a year's mentoring programme.
Speaking to Reuters at the event on Tuesday (October 25), Pike - who was there as a citation reader - described this kind of recognition as a "badge of approval" within the industry.
''You start out and you feel so lost and you might have an ounce of success, but you haven't got any respect yet and I think a sort of, some kind of badge of approval like this means that you might not be known by everyone but you have already earned some respect in the industry and that is what you crave more than anything.''
Despite her own success, including playing a Bond girl in 'Die Another Day' and her Oscar and BAFTA nominations for 'Gone Girl', Pike revealed she can still occasionally feel "lost" in her career:
''At times if I am honest it probably never goes away, there is always a point that you feel lost and you think 'ok I am going to give up after this one - I can't do it', but you know I have started to feel I know my process, I know what I need to work, I know the kind of preparation I need, I know where to look for the support.''
Amongst the 18 creatives selected this year by BAFTA is actress Florence Pugh, echoing Pike's words - she explained why the recognition is so important:
''I was trying to put my finger on it when the news first came out and was trying to think why am I so utterly like proud of this and I think it's because you work so hard for so long and you just hope, you hope you are going in some form of direction that's the right one and it's something like this that gives you a tick I suppose, it gives you the reason to be happy that you are going in the right direction and what you have done so far is good.''
20-year-old Pugh - who stars in new film 'Lady Macbeth' - is one of several actors BAFTA have singled out.
'Roots' actor Malachi Kirby also made the list, 'I don't know what it means yet', he told Reuters, 'but it feels lovely, it's a lovely feeling, it feels really supportive.'
As well as starring opposite Forest Whittaker in 'Roots', the 27-year-old will soon be seen in an episode of Charlie Brooker's dystopian anthology show "Black Mirror" - which explores the darker consequences of a world digitally connected.
''For me what Black Mirror does is it goes 'this is how the world is and this is how it could be if we keep going in this direction' and for me this is one of the reasons why I find it so terrifying watching it cos I am like wow this isn't actually that far fetched ... this could really happen and you don't want that to happen,'' Kirby said.
The year's Breakthrough Birts included creatives from a range of fields and included actor Kayode Ewumi and comedian Tom Davis.
The newcomers mingled with several high profile guests including British actor Will Poulter, who has just finished working with Brad Pitt.
''I actually finished filming 'War Machine' - that was my first time working with Brad but yeah finished shooting with him and he was phenomenal, incredible, professional and he is amazing in the movie, so very very cool for me to be able to work with him,'' he said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
