- Story Text:A wildfire blaze in southern Croatia that had been threatening the city of Split has been "normalised", authorities said on Tuesday (July 18).
The fire which had reached the eastern suburbs of the country's second-largest city of Split, having scorched 4,500 hectares (11,100 acres) of pine forest and scrubland since it started in the early hours of Monday.
Late on Monday, firefighters and army personnel managed to prevent the fire from reaching the city itself and by Tuesday morning, the situation had improved significantly, the mayor of Split said.
Several hundred firemen called in from all parts of Croatia managed to contain the bulk of the fire as strong winds subsided by Tuesday morning, allowing firefighting planes to assist people on the ground.
Sixteen people had sought medical assistance for injuries sustained in the fire, a local hospital said.
By Monday afternoon only a few smaller locations were still ablaze, including one threatening the village of Srinjine southeast of Split. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
