- Story Text: The Vietnam administration of Forestry and Animal Asia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Wednesday (July 19) aiming to eradicate illegal bear bile farming in Vietnam by 2020.
The MOU will act as a legal framework for authorities and other organisations to work efficiently to fight illegal bear bile farming and rescue the remaining bears kept in Vietnamese bile farms.
According to Animal Asia, more than 10,000 bears are kept in bile farms in China, and around 1000 in Vietnam. The bile is extracted using various painful, invasive techniques, and is used in traditional medicines.
In the wild, bears live for up to 30 years, however, bears on the farms live for only five to 10 years before dying of infection, disease and malnutrition. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
