- Story Text: A Palestinian who tried to stab two Israelis soldiers in the West Bank on Thursday (July 20) was shot dead, the Israeli army said.
The attempt came as Israel was facing mounting Palestinian anger over newly-installed metal detectors at the entrances to the Temple Mount-Noble Sanctuary compound, but it was not immediately clear if the alleged attack was prompted by tensions over the holy site.
After the attack was foiled, Israeli security forces clashes with Palestinians in Tekoa, near the West Bank town of Bethlehem.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was reportedly weighing whether to remove the metal detectors at the holy site. This security measure was installed after Israeli arabs launched a deadly attack against Israeli policemen outside the Al-Aqsa mosque last week and has stoked Palestinian protests. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
