- Story Text: EU and British negotiators found some common ground at the end of a first full round of Brexit talks on Thursday (July 20) but big differences remain over citizens' rights and uncertainty persists over the financial settlement and the Irish border.
At the end of four days of talks in Brussels, which focused on setting out positions on key issues, the European Union's chief negotiator Michel Barnier said there was "a fundamental divergence" on how to protect the rights of EU citizens living in Britain and of Britons in the EU after Brexit.
He insisted that the European Court of Justice should guarantee citizens' rights after Brexit.
Britain's Brexit minister David Davis said Britain is a country that honours its international commitments and will continue to do so after it has left the European Union.
Asked whether Britain accepted it would have to pay to leave the bloc, Davis said the government had made its position clear in Prime Minister May's Lancaster House speech in January and in its Article 50 letter in March.
Barnier said Britain needed to provide clarifications on the Brexit bill and on the Irish border at the next round of talks in late August. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
