- Story Text: Japan's top government spokesperson said on Friday (July 21) that First Lady Akie Abe and U.S. President Donald Trump had a "meaningful conversation" during a dinner for G20 leaders held earlier this month in Germany "through an interpreter".
The comments came after Trump had said in an interview with the New York Times that First Lady Abe does not speak English, which spurred speculation that the Japanese first lady may have pretended not to speak the language to avoid talking with the president.
A source familiar with the matter said the Japanese first lady speaks English but often uses interpreters. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
